Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty) can refresh and rejuvenate your eyes, correct sagging or drooping eyelids and remove excess fat, skin and atrophied muscle around your eyes. Blepharoplasty offers both aesthetic and functional benefits. When tissue around the eyes droops far enough, it may obscure peripheral vision, potentially making it difficult to observe dangers such as speeding cars.

Removing this tissue can restore the patient’s vision while making the eyes appear more open, alert, and youthful.

Does eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty) affect vision?

Most patients find their vision not affected, others find they are blurry for a few days. The eyes can be mildly sore, moist or slightly dry in some cases. Depending on the operation, ointments or drops may be used in the eye to help protect them.

Is there much discomfort after surgery? How long do I have to stay off work?

The majority of patients report mild aching or burning, which is usually well controlled with Tylenol and cold compresses.

While most normal tasks can be resumed within two days, too much activity during the first week will increase swelling. Strenuous activities should be avoided for two weeks or more. Most people prefer to lay low for several weeks.

How precise is the result & how long will the effect last?

A realistic expectation is that most patients will achieve about a 75-90% improvement after upper blepharoplasty and a 60-80% improvement after lower blepharoplasty.

Compared to procedures designed primarily to fight the effects of gravity (face lift, brow lift, etc.), blepharoplasty lasts a very long time. In the majority of patients, cosmetic eyelid surgery is performed only once.
