If your face looks like you’re blushing and you get bumps that are a bit like acne, you might have a skin condition called rosacea. It is most common in middle aged women.

Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels in your face. It may also produce small, red, pus-filled bumps.

It is a chronic condition which may flare up for weeks to months and then go away for a while. Rosacea can be mistaken for acne, or other skin problems which is why its important to consult a dermatologist for the correct diagnosis and treatment.

SYMPTOMS

  • The most common thing you’ll notice is redness on your cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead.
  • Broken blood vessels might show through your skin, which can thicken and swell up.
  • Stinging and burning of your skin
  • Patches of rough, dry skin
  • A swollen, bulb-shaped nose
  • Larger pores
  • Broken blood vessels on your eyelids
  • Bumps on your eyelids

The cause of rosacea is unknown, but it could be due to a combination of hereditary and environmental factors.

A number of factors can trigger flare-ups, including:

  • Hot drinks and spicy foods
  • Red wine and other alcoholic beverages
  • Temperature extremes
  • Sunlight or wind
  • Emotions
  • Exercise
  • Various cosmetic products

TREATMENT

The treatment of rosacea is aimed at controlling flare ups of the disease.

It includes a variety of topical creams, and oral medications depending on severity of the condition.

We can also use lasers such as IPL to reduce the size of broken blood vessels.
